Daily Schedule

Each day will follow roughly the same pattern:

8am – Breakfast

9am – Morning Session/Field Trip

12noon – Lunch

1pm – Afternoon Session/Field Trip

6pm – Dinner

7pm – Evening reflection activity

On-campus morning and afternoon sessions will include guest speakers in person and via zoom that are experts in the topics being presented, small group conversations, instruction on approaches to teaching difficult history and other similar activities. Field trips to various locations in and around Africatown/Plateau are scheduled for Monday-Thursday of the workshop week, mostly during the morning sessions (for cooler weather). An evening reflection activity will include some basic utilization of a digital tool to record participants’ reactions and experiences.

Travel Schedule

It is anticipated that participants will travel on the Sunday of the week of the workshop as the opening sessions will begin promptly at 9am on each Monday of the workshop week. Additionally, there will be a participant reception at 6:00 p.m. each Sunday evening.  A shuttle will be provided from the Mobile airport to campus each hour on the hour on Sunday afternoon/evening. Participants can plan to travel back beginning late Friday afternoon/evening or Saturday morning of each week. Shuttle service may be available on Saturday morning.

Ground Travel

Mobile has Greyhound, Megabus and other busing options for those that need it. There is no rail service at this time. Parking is available for free on campus for those who choose to travel by car. The address of Spring Hill College is:

4000 Dauphin Street, Mobile, Alabama, 36608.

Air Travel

For participants who need to travel by air, Mobile Regional Airport is less than 10 miles from campus. More affordable options can sometimes be found at nearby airports in Pensacola (one-hour drive to campus), Gulfport/Biloxi (one-hour drive to campus), or New Orleans (two-hour fifteen minutes drive to campus).

Food/Lodging

It is anticipated that on-campus housing options will include both single rooms in shared suites and single suites in the $70-90/night range. Wi-Fi is widely available for free across campus. An on-campus meal plan is required for all participants and must be paid by registration. All three meals will be available each day of the workshop.

Workshop participants that may want to utilize the hotel option as opposed to staying on campus in shared accommodations can call the hotel, Hampton Inn & Suites, direct at 251-343-4007 to reserve a room and ask for the Spring Hill College rate when booking a room.  That rate is $114 per night for a standard king or double queen or $124 for a king studio suite.  The rates include a full hot breakfast, Wi-Fi, parking and fitness center.  There is also a private and relaxing outdoor pool space that is behind the hotel.  The hotel will be completely renovated by March of 2023 and is a quick drive from campus and very close to dozens of great dining options and an easy drive to downtown or the causeway locations.  Participants can also contact the manager directly if they run into issues in making a reservation or if they have any questions:
